Who decides “Hot” and “Trendy” in the fashion world?
It is not the exclusive right of any particular group to decide what is hot and trendy. For a fact, the designers and the fashion merchandisers make their personal judgment and varied opinions are sought, and they observe the general consensus.
One thing is clear: The consumers are primarily responsible for the decision of what’s hot and trendy based on what they finally buy and wear.
The fashion cycle
The first part of this cycle is that moment when you’re captivated on seeing a great hat, a beautiful dress or a lovely pair of shoes that graced the runway. The next part is when you emulate what you saw, having a taste of the “big pie.” Give it to the top shots, the fashion merchandisers and celebrities that have come close to the latest fashion immediately off the runway, which is not in the retail stores yet.
At the second stage, this new fashion trend will be all over the newspapers, they will grace magazine covers, appear on TV and across the internet. Finally, it enters the market and consumers adopt it, much at a lower cost.
When in the second stage, the new merchandise is always expensive in designer collections. But in the third stage, an average fashion enthusiast can get it at quite affordable prices.
Most consumers will buy it between the second and third stage
Before now, it takes ample time for this fashion trend to “travel” from the runway down to the mass market, but in recent years, both designers and producers have deemed it fit to switch gears and fashion cycle is now in full speed. These days, a hot trend makes landing in discount stores in the next couple of days. This goes to show how fashion has evolved over the years and how people have caught up with the fact that runway outfits can practically become theirs if they so wish—in a short time too.
